The importance of ideas
Ideas are the basis of any creative process. Ideas are the seeds of productivity which is what, ultimately allows us to create web sites that are different, appealing, creative and appropriate for our clients.
But what is it that makes these ideas, how do we think of things to turn into web sites? Well, that's the big question, isn't it. It is a question that need a bit of background to truly answer. We'll start by examining what a web site actually is.
What is a web site
A web site is a collection of graphical, textual and interactive elements, put together in certain way, that may be presented by a web browser as a single, unified entity. A web site will contain text and links and pictures, all presented in such a way as to convey a message or piece of information regarding a topic or subject to the user.
That is a fairly accurate description of something that is now very familiar.
Identifying the needs of a web site design
Most web sites rely on the use of graphical elements to demonstrate shape, texture and colour on a web site. Graphical elements, colours, shapes, logos and animation, all add to a web site to bring a rich variety and visual appeal.
The choice of graphical elements and colour is very important in giving a web site its identity. We recognise brands by colours, shapes and in the same way, our brains recognise familiar web sites by subconsciously matching the colour and shape of a web site to something that gives a positive, if subconscious emotion of familiarity.
The decision of what colours, shapes and images are used on web site are probably most often dictated by brand. Even for internet based businesses, there will have been an initial brand concept, brand styles and guidelines produced that clearly define the colour, logo and message that needs to be expressed by the web presented visage.
There may be further, more subtle requirements for a web site design. It can sometimes be difficult to extend a concept that works well on paper, into one that works well in the electronic world of pixels on a web site, on a computer screen.
Quite often, some very creative and abstract thinking is required to reproduce a brand in web format that is recognisable as the parent brand without visitors thinking the site is simply a generic web site with a big name logo on it.
The importance of creativity and experience of layout to create the correct process of drawing the eye where you want it can be seen in many web sites where some thought and attention has been paid to identifying the purpose of the site as a marketing tool.
Web sites can just be pretty pictures
Web sites come in many shapes, sizes, colours and formats. There are many, many fantastic artistic web site creations that can be regarded as genuine works of art, that function as great marketing tools. There are many web sites that are absolutely plain, bare, simplistic pages but are some of the most commercially successful web sites in the world, representing billion dollar industries.
But web sites can also be just simply pretty pictures. It is refreshing to know that there is still a place on the world wide web for a simple, personal expression of feeling in a piece of innocent artwork.
The job of a web site is to convey information. Whether that's a product, a 'how to', a book review or just someone's creative work, as long as you know what you want your web site to achieve, you can be as creative (or not) as you like.
