A little birdie told me

All the myths and tall tales, urban and otherwise, can be found on the internet.

You can be sure that if a tall tale has been told, it'll be on a web site somewhere. In fact there are thousands of web sites that are just there to tell us about a myth or two.

The internet as a research tool

The internet is a massive resource for data, information, opinion and rhetoric.

But how do we separate the fact from fiction, the news from opinion, the truth from nonsense?

I remember reading, many years ago, about a newspaper reporter, thinking themselves smarter than the average hack, started trawling news groups for stories, only to print completely fictional urban myths as truth. I think one newspaper or broadcaster actually reported on the transfer of a fictional footballer from a T.V show to Liverpool F.C. for £**million!

Now that is real power. Power that we should not take for granted.

There is no better resource of information than the internet, but I would always advise several cross referenced opinions or supporting arguments before committing to anything the internet tells me about any topic that is important, like for a thesis or T.V show.

Web forums and information

The nature of our job at N Web Design, that of designers, developers and marketers of web sites and associated services, requires a lot of technical know-how and knowledge. Quite often, we need to find out some extra information on a project or service or programming technique and what better place than the internet.

Quite often, this information is in an article or blog, but there are also many times where the solution is the answer to a question posted on a web site forum or news group by someone who has encountered the same problem.

In our experience, these places are normally pretty good, but occasionally, you get some, well frankly, quite bizarre and misleading, if not downright dangerous answers.

Mostly, web site information is good

It is quite amazing, given the amount of opportunity for nefarious activity that the internet offers, that most of the time, people are honest, reliable and responsible when contributing to th internet. That's a good thing as far as we are concerned.

And remember, if you have something to say, some help to offer or some tips to share, the internet is a great place to do it, so get going with those blogs, forums and articles and get contributing!
