Defining web design

What specifically is web design?

Web design is general term for creating a design that, using html and css, can be turned into a web site.

That all seems very obvious, so why, I hear you ask, am I telling you this?

Well, web design has become such an enormous business area in the last ten years that the whole sector, which is made up of several significant parts, has become blurred.

Let's introduce some facts and clarity to web design

The term 'design' is also a bit of an enormous topic with wide ranging focus. It could be designing shoes, hats, candy bar wrappers or the parts of a motor car?

But we are focusing on web design, so that narrows it down a little.

So we are back to the term 'web design'. Strictly speaking, that is just a reference to a design that can be used or is appropriate for using as the basis of a web site.

So that's cleared it all up... hasn't it...?

The other elements that make up web design

Now we are happy with the idea of a 'design' appropriate for a web site, what's next?

This may be a matter of semantics but web design surely pertains to the design, construction and provision of a web site.

So we now have some conversion of a design into elements that can be added together, normally graphics, html and css (pictures, markup and styles) , that put in the right order will make a web site.

I think we have it.

But surely there is more?

Yes there is. The processes of making the html and styles that form the structure of a web site, as well as any programming that is required normally make web design a bit more involved than most people realise.

Why is this important?

People perceive us as web designers. After all, our company trades as N-webdesign.

It is important for clients and visitors to realise that, although we are web designers, we are also many other things.

We are programmers, managers, marketeers and problem solvers.
