Content management
What is content management?
Content management is simply the facility to manage the content of a website without changing any of the html, css or source code.
Content management systems are designed to be used by editors who have no technical skills.
There is almost always a small period of familiarisation with content managed applications for new users but the goal is usually to provide a publishing system that can be used by anybody.
Using a content management normally entails creating pages and adding content in a word processor like interface.
Why is content management such a good idea?
The single most significant benefit of having a content management system is the complete control you will have over your web site content. Yes, that's right. If you don't like the way something in the web site is expressed, just log in and change it.
There are also many other advantage of a content management system. These include on-going cost of ownership, flexibility within marketing and theming pages and the ability to get the web site you want without the shackles of providing content immediately.
This may not sound too impressive, but think of those times when you wanted to add new pages and had to wait for the designer or developer to get round to it. And it costs money every time. The benefits of a content management system are clear.
Is there a downside to having a CMS?
No, there is no disadvantage with having a content managed web site.
You may pay a little more for the initial design and development, especilly if you want some bespoke additions, but this won't normally be any more than developing a bespoke component for a php or asp.net driven site.
Some people suggest that all CMS drivn websites look the same, but this is untrue. All web sites that use or are strongly based on a default template will look similar but there really is no limit to hw you can express your laout in a content managed web site.
So, how do you get a CMS for your company or web site?
It is very easy to get a CMS for your web site. There are many open source application frameworks that offer industry strength and feature rich systems [for example, we use SilverStripe] that are mature, well supported and expanding in functionality all the time.
